Hire Purchase (HP)

This finance option begins with a deposit of 5 to 50% of a vehicle’s worth, with the following of the vehicle’s estimated retail price (and interest) calculated into monthly payments. These last for an agreed set amount of time, usually 1 to 5 years. Once the agreement ends, the car is yours to keep.

Lease Purchase (LP)

A Lease Purchase is characterised by a starting deposit of typically 5 to 40% of the vehicle price. From then on, there are monthly instalments, which are lower than the norm for a Hire Purchase, and last for an agreed time of 1 to 4 years. In the end, you can choose to buy the vehicle via a final balloon payment, or part-exchange, resell or refinance your vehicle.

Personal Contract Purchase (PCP)

The distinguishing feature of a PCP is that it doesn’t require a vehicle purchase. This form of loan allows you to use the car from an agreed time-frame of 1 to 4 years, followed by an array of options: either part-exchange the car, return it, keep it by paying a final ‘balloon’ fee or refinance it by paying an agreed minimum residual value.
